It just doesn’t get better for Austin family photographer Ziem than a photo session for a good cause.

Ziem has the honor of serving as one of the official photographers for this year’s Dell Trust Miracle Book. The gorgeous Hicks family, members of the Dell Trust, booked a session with Ziem in hopes of getting a good shot for their page in the Miracle Book. The only problem now will be picking just one photo to use!

The Hicks chose a special time to capture their family. Relatively new to the area, the Hicks have four children under six (!), the oldest of which just started kindergarten. What better than a family photo shoot to honor this season of new beginnings?

The family chose their own beautiful backyard as the session setting, which proved an inspired choice for putting the family at ease in front of the camera. With four young kids, two of whom were inseparable and one of whom wasn’t thrilled with the grassy setting, making the kids feel comfortable with a photographer could have proved quite the challenge. However, in her usual Mary Poppins style, Ziem further endeared herself to the kids. She jumped on the trampoline, picked flowers, and ran amok with them until she’d won her little charges over. That fun-filled ease comes across on camera, displaying the sweet nature of the kids.

Finally, the grande dame of the family, golden retriever Bella, also made an appearance, lending her docile presence to the proceedings.

Ziem thanks the Hicks family for inviting her into their lovely home, as well as the Dell Trust Miracle Book for entrusting her to work on behalf of a cause dear to her heart.

What to Wear Fall 2016 – Top Three Tips

It’s that special time of year here in Austin. School begins, the calendar reads “fall” – and yet our temperatures hover in the “HOTSTILLHOT #WHENWILLITEND” range. What to do when Faux Fall is upon us and the holidays – and holiday cards – are on the horizon?

What to Wear Fall 2016 Austin Photographers Ziem Photography

Ziem is here to our holiday card rescue, answering the question most frequently asked by clients – what to wear for a photo shoot? Here are her top three suggestions for assembling a wardrobe sure to dazzle your holiday card recipients (which is obviously the point of sending those cards, right? Right.)

Tip #1 – Dress For Where You Want to Hang Your Session Prints, Not Your Holiday Card

Surprised that the all-important holiday card isn’t the point of the dressing? Here’s where Ziem encourages us to think long-term. While you may be doing a fall shoot with the intention of using those shots in a holiday card, those cards only last the season. Plus, most of us don’t know which card we’ll be using when we do our shoot. Therefore it’s easier and better long-term to coordinate what you’re wearing to the place you ultimately want to hang the images.

For example, this wardrobe set for a family of four is just the thing to spice up a neutral room, yet it wouldn’t look out of place on most contemporary holiday cards.

Tip #2 – Dress to Coordinate with One Another, Not Match

Gone are the days of 1980s yore, when dressing for photos was as easy as everyone donning matching white button-downs and acid-washed jeans. Mom jeans, that is. A more modern, less Mom Jeans take on family dressing is coordination, where patterns and colors complement one another but aren’t identical.

To get started on coordination, Ziem often employs a rule of thumb often used in interior design – pick one color to dominate at approximately 60%, with one “dominant” accent at around 40% and another around 10%. As far as patterns go, a family wanting a more traditional look might look to balance solids, geometrics, and florals.

On the other hand, a family wanting a more contemporary look might stick to a more monochromatic palette and more subtle patterns, choosing to mix up textures instead. Metallic accents can spice up this sort of neutral look and adds a fun holiday touch as well.

Tip #3 – Try On Outfits Before Your Shoot

Ziem’s last tip is her most important one – all family members need to try on their outfits before the actual shoot. As parents know, children in particular won’t be their happy, boisterous selves if they’re in itchy, uncomfortable clothing or too-tight shoes. Getting candid shots of a person’s best self involves his or her being comfortable, and that starts with the wardrobe not only looking good, but feeling good as well.

With those three tips in mind, you’re ready to tackle Faux Fall and book your fall mini-session shoot – speaking of, contact Ziem at z@ziemphotography.com today to sign up! Only one spot remaining . . .

Austin Family Photographer – Let Them Eat Cake

Austin family photographerLet them eat cake!” goes the infamous saying. In the case of equally dictatorial three-year-olds celebrating a birthday, perhaps the more appropriate saying might be, “Let *me* eat cake!

austin child birthday photographer-foodie-kids Austin family photographer

And so it was at the celebration of a certain “threenager” Paige – mine, as a matter of fact! Austin family photographer Ziem kindly set up a cake decorating session for Party Paige, my son, and her adorable minis with local fave Foodie Kids. After kicking off their class with a brief coloring stint, the kids moved on to baking business. A friendly Foodie Kids instructor patiently led them through each step of the decorating process. She cleverly used a pre-baked cake and letting the minis focus on the fun part – frosting!

Birthday girl Paige and her friends loved getting to do the real work of baking – rolling out the icing, carefully selecting her decorations – all with child-sized cooking utensils. We moms loved that the mess of a child-baked cake wasn’t happening in our own respective houses! Of course we also noted how much fun our kids were having – but did I mention the part about not having to clean up afterwards?!

In addition, Foodie Kids not only fosters independence – or, as three-year-olds everywhere would say, “
I DO IT MYSELF!” – it encourages teamwork. Our kids had to work together on just how to put together their masterpiece. With an occasional veto from the birthday girl, they settled their differences and collaborated on their work of tasty art.

Finally, after a rousing round of “Happy Birthday”, our little bakers closed up shop. We had to hurry home and test out their creation, of course. The yummy cake was well worth the Foodie Kids trip alone, but what my kids still mention is the fun they had there. Thanks to Foodie Kids and Austin family photographer Ziem Photography for making my little girl’s dreams of cake eating and Being in Charge a reality!

Austin Family Lifestyle Photographer – Daddy’s Girl

“You’ve gotta know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em” goes the famed country song, and so it goes with toddlers as well. It’s something mama & Austin Family Lifestyle photographer Ziem knows all too well. When the photogenic Nguyen family was able to book a last-minute Florida beach session during their vacation there, our photographer-in-chief knew not only sprang into action, she did so with Toddler Reality (TM) managed as well.

Despite the day-of booking and Toddler Reality (TM) – we’ll get to the latter in a minute – Mama Nguyen expertly coordinated wardrobe, hair, and make-up for her clan. She’d envisioned a floaty, white look for this sunset shoot – relaxed with a touch of glamour – and she nailed it!

austin-lifestyle-family-photographers-30-a-rosemary-seaside-alys-beach

Ziem knew going in that a few things would limit her shoot time – the fading light at sunset, and sweet little sister Ella. Speaking of, did we mention toddlers? True to toddler form, darling Miss Ella – noted Daddy’s Girl – decided she didn’t care for the sand and insisted that Dad carry her throughout the shoot. Having worked with so many families over the years, Ziem is accustomed to working quickly, so she thankfully was able to meet Linh’s goal of “just one good group shot”. Rather than forcing poor Ella to try and stand, everyone agreed to just work with it and let Daddy carry his little lady throughout.

Big Sister Ana was a complete angel and a laid-back, mature joy to work with (read: no longer a toddler :-).

Toddler jokes aside, Ziem adored working with all of the Nguyens and is thrilled they were able to take home these sweet memories of their Florida vacation – sudden toddler allergy to sand & all!
