Not all cake smash sessions are created equal. Mia’s, I would say, was down right fabulous and the payoff was major. From her amazing outfits, to the darling cake, gorgeous props, and the perfect photography setting, Mia nailed it. Any child photography session that includes a lake and a destroyed cake is fine in my book. These modern birthday portraits are about as cute as it gets.
What I love most about Sandy is her enthusiasm and discerning taste when it comes to her family’s photographs. (** OK and she’s got some pretty rockin’ dance moves too! **) To transform Leila into a modern-day Audrey, we came up with a straight lined, elegant black dress with a mesh neckline so darling and so interesting. Sandy added a few timeless touches including long, black satin gloves and a tiara. I happened to have a pair of enormous clip-ons which Leila delightfully wore because any child of Sandy’s is destined for a life of fabulousness. Those bling-y earrings gave the photographs wow factor without competing with her hair ornament.
One of the perks of working with an Austin baby photographer over the years is the relationship that develops. Starting with a engagement session to a wedding to baby Chandler’s newborn photos, Ziem has worked with the Beahm family from the get-go and really gets their fun-loving and stylish flair for life. When it came time for the Beahms’ most recent milestone – Chandler’s first birthday party – Ziem knew just how to capture the smashing festivities. (Apologies for the bad joke, the first of many to come.)
The party was full of mama Kifany’s signature style, including Chandler’s “One” onesie, fur vest, and moccasins. The coordinating banner and cake topper were the icing on the proverbial cake (“cake“, get it? Told you there were more awful bits to come.)
Dainty Chandler didn’t take to the cake smashing at first, but after an icing assist she quickly caught on. Kifany removed the decor details and Chandler’s onesie to allow for more messy fun. Ziem made sure to snap photos of both the picture perfect “before” and “after”, sensing the latter would be a family favorite snap for years to come.
The party setting provided that ample natural light Ziem loves to chase. Between the light and the genuine looks of surprise by the family, who had no idea the cake smash photo debut was on the agenda, it made for a sweet (“sweet“, haha! Last one, I promise) setting.
What a joy it was for Ziem to see the hearts Chandler melted with her cake smash cuteness. Thanks to the Beahms for years of support – here’s to the next big milestone!

I met Kifany and Matt for their engagement photos many moons ago. Fortunately, it didn’t stop there. From documenting the incredible affair that was their wedding day, to their newborn photography session, to capturing Miss C in her sweet, angelic one-year glory, they have done it all with such style and grace. It was our original plan to use these latest photos for her first birthday invitations. Because the resulting images were total cuteness, Mom couldn’t resist an inaugural holiday card. best photographers in austin
I get giddy and do a happy dance when we work together because I know Kif will have taken the time to ensure that every little detail is perfection. For example, she handpicked the flowers for their flower wreaths and kept me in the loop to make certain the colors, size, and look were just right. Additionally, she texted me a handful of options for dresses. As a result, C didn’t get lost in the details. best photographers in austin
Truth be told, C wasn’t a fan of the headdress – not even for a second – and surprisingly had a strong aversion to it getting anywhere near her head. But Mom takes everything in stride and let the child lead. That is why I’m being completely sincere when I say I couldn’t handpick more perfect clients-turned-friends.
So excited to celebrate C’s first year of life this weekend. We have a fun cake smash scheduled for tomorrow morning. Check my Instagram or blog back next week to see it here first. best photographers in austin
