For Austin children’s photographer Ziem, it doesn’t get any better than working with. happy, energetic kids whose parents have set the stage for a successful shoot.

The Neland family’s oldest daughter (not pictured here) is a longtime friend of Ziem’s oldest (by six-year-old standards), hence the Nelands met Ziem and became clients. So it was no surprise when the two younger Neland girls showed up to their shoot well-prepared by Mom & Dad. These laid-back beauties had tried on their outfits in advance. Importantly, they had also been encouraged by their parents to enjoy the shoot. The girls clearly picked up on that. The photographer picked up on that. As a result they showed up with great energy and big smiles.

The middle daughter Charlotte is turning four and the youngest Abigail will be one, which provided the perfect excuse for a photo session – and balloons! The girls proved very cooperative and easygoing, something they’ve clearly inherited from their parents. In fact, Ziem has never heard baby Neland cry! Their happy spirits came across on camera as the middle sister wanted to spend the entire session loving on baby.

One of Ziem’s greatest strengths as a children’s photographer is getting to know her wee clients and making them feel comfortable on camera. For example, she learned that Charlotte and her own youngest daughter Zara both wanted a “rainbow unicorn” fourth birthday party. UNICORNS are SO real! You can just sense that magical excitement in the photos.

Austin Family Photography || A Perfectly Imperfect Shoot

***Austin family photography fall mini-session dates still available here***

Sometimes it’s the things that don’t go to plan that make the Austin family photography shoot. Take for example the Hester family session, where one adorable little boy’s mud slide made for a perfectly imperfect shoot. For starters, Mama Hester – who knows Ziem from that favorite Westlake family hotspot, the library – just wanted a good shot of their family of four. What she got, though, was so much more – and by “more” we do in part mean “more mud”! Austin family photography

Adelina’s pink tutu provided a fun pop of color, which balanced out little brother Theo’s adventures with girly flair. Ziem loved Marissa’s adventurous mixing of florals, gingham, and solids for the family outfits.

The photographer and the smiles didn’t stop there! Ziem was able to sneak a few shots of his “walk of shame”. It’s those real moments that Ziem is so good at capturing on film, those (sometimes messy!) bits that make up a large part of parenting.

Austin Photography Mini Session || Candid Camera

* * * Austin photography mini session details and availability here. * * *

When shooting new clients, photographer-in-chief Ziem never knows which aspect of a family will reveal itself first. The Revels family quickly showed theirs – joy – via a burping lesson, naturally.

The Revels, who won a photography package generously donated by Ziem to their children’s elementary school silent auction, are obviously a fun-loving bunch. Mama Revels asked Ziem to try and capture the kids’ true smiles versus the forced ones they tend to give on camera. Ziem met her goal, along with candid shots of the kids interacting and more, master child wrangler that she is.

The classically attired Revels kids helped Ziem throughout the shoot. The seven-year-old introduced himself to Ziem immediately, while the four-year-old paused mid-session to thank her for documenting their joy. The other two Revels contributed by generally being adorable. The fading light of the park setting and the airplanes drifting through the skies made for ideal shoot conditions and little boy entertainment. first of all since most of all

Speaking of entertainment, this crew – photographer included – couldn’t stop laughing. From silly face making to the aforementioned big boys teaching little brother how to burp, this family’s affection for one another is clear.

Ziem wrapped up the shoot just before the rain began – an ideal ending to an ideal shoot!

Ziem couldn’t be happier that the Revels won her school donation. She can’t wait to see them at future shoots and on the t-ball field. Her daughter & one of the Revels play for the same team. Speaking of fun candid moments . . . !

Holiday photo wardrobe ideas can be a chore. You’ve finally booked yourself an Austin photographer, and you’re still working on convincing your son (ok, *my* son) that neon Under Armour is not holiday photo appropriate. To help ease your holiday burden, today we’re sharing some holiday photo wardrobe ideas and tips for dressing for Faux Fall, part 2.

Tip 1: Dress for a Timeless Look, Not the Holidays

First, remember that these photos will hang in your and your children’s grandparents’ houses all year. As much as we love those holiday signs of cheer like reindeer and candy canes, better to save those for class parties. That is, unless you’re on board with Christmas in July (or all sports apparel all the time, in the case of my beloved son).

Tip 2: Add Neutrals to Traditional Holiday Colors to Keep Things Timeless

Second, to pull off the holiday look while maintaining a classic feel, add neutral colors to offset those red, green, or gold tones which yell “falalalala.” Shades of navy, black, gray, or tan all add a contemporary twist to the holiday usual. Consider adding a trendy metallic to the mix, the glitter of which subtly brings to mind that holiday sparkle.

Tip 3: Layer on Accessories to Add Texture and Holiday Feel

Third, consider adding “fall” accessories like scarves or tights to add texture, pattern, and holiday feel. Tights serve both functional and flattering purposes – they both ward off any chill and make legs appear longer. Trendy faux fur can also add an insta-holiday pop when the weather isn’t quite there yet – yes, I’m looking at you, Faux Fall in Texas!

Tip 4: Always Try on Clothes Before Your Shoot

We repeat Ziem’s top tip here because it’s just that important. If you and your kids – ok, especially the kids – aren’t happy in your clothes, that will come across on camera. Austin family photographer Ziem loves working with clients on picking just the right outfits; please feel free to send her any questions as you plan your shoot’s look.

With these tips in mind, your holiday card will not only impress friends and family – the entire point, right? – but will also become treasured keepsakes in your home.
