Birthday Princess

I’m sure most of you remember the big day that was April 29th. It was so big that one Prime Minister declared it a public holiday to ensure most people possible would have a chance to celebrate. That’s right, a gorgeous princess turned one on that very magical day and Austin was all abuzz with glittery wands, tutus, fairies, princesses, you name it. Tulsi and I were so fortunate to be part of the royal celebration, and let me tell you we were blown away by the amazing details, all hand selected and hand made by her mother. I know which royally crafty mom I would love to hire for our next big birthday event!!

Happy Hump Day

Several days before Tulsi’s first big fall {and in case you haven’t heard resulted in a big boo boo for her and no Mother of the Year Award for me} I found the perfect back drop for a modern vintage themed birthday shoot. As I patiently waited for the boo boo to naturally heal literally the most suitable vintage prop jumped off an Etsy storefront and rocked on over to Austin in time for the big shoot, a shoot big enough to warrant a test session in the stifling heat Monday. I returned bright and early Tuesday morning ready with my suitable prop and willing model, and Internet would you believe it– there were guys tearing down the last few bits of the set. I was a little sad but thanks to my photo motivators, J & A, we improvised at a different location on South Congress.

I am an advocate of alleviating the Hump Day Slump or The Sads with caffeine. Consider this the written equivalent of your favorite expresso… double shot.

Test session on Monday.

More Than Mom

Today I celebrated my first Mother’s Day. Today I also celebrate the women who inspire me or have helped me become the Mom I am today. Most of these are moms, one is an expectant mother, a few look forward to being a mom someday soon, one is raising a child alone after the loss of a partner, one is a foster parent, and a handful with no desire to become a mother. These are: my amazing mother, who I appreciate more than ever now that I am a mom; my beautiful sisters, for loving me and my little family unconditionally; my sweet grandmothers for rearing my parents; my wonderful aunts and cousins, another form of Mom and Sister; my girl friends, old and new, rare gems I truly adore; and my nephew’s mom, the one who raises my late brother’s only son alone. You ladies help me to grow as a person every day. Tulsi and I appreciate you. Thank you all for the overwhelming warm wishes and messages. I’m sorry I couldn’t get back to everyone but know that they were well received and I wish you the best in return.

And to my dear hubby and darling daughter, thank you for allowing me to experience the new dimension in emotion and for making my first year of motherhood such a joy.

Can hear the angels playing trumpets on that one? *Sappy* Happy Mother’s Day! xo

Brunch at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin

Side note: This week Tulsi had her first visit to the Westlake ER
and she started walking. Never a dull moment in the Malkani home!!

Engagement Session + Save the Date Video: Jennifer & Patrick

“The video is so wonderful!! My family and friends loved the video and thought you did a wonderful job. Patrick and I are so happy with the all the shots. Let us know when the rest of the pictures are available for us to view, we can’t wait!!! Thank you so much for everything, we appreciate all that you have done for us!”

I’d like you to meet Jennifer and Patrick, winners of my annual “Just Shoot Me Contest”. After months of communication via e-mail and phone, the couple traveled to Austin for their engagement portraits and Save-the-Date video. It was so nice to finally meet them in person and I must admit I was not prepared for their beauty and all the ensuing fun.

A little back story on J&P, Patrick is really into sports, Jennifer has a competitive streak and they play together on a flag football team. How’s that for awesome? I thought I would some how incorporate sports and competition into the shoot by instigating a race between the two and let’s say Patrick lost in a pair of shoes he earned after winning a competition with his basketball buddies……..?

We scheduled a  late afternoon portrait session at Town Lake and let me pause for a brief second to apologize to the lovely couple for all my unexpected discoveries and to also thank them for their patience in the dreadful heat. It took us an hour to complete a mile, with stops, but I can at least say the walk back was a lot quicker (for which I am sure they were ever grateful).

Beautiful couples like Jennifer and Patrick make me enjoy engagement portraits so much more. And just before we hopped into our cars and part ways I was presented with a nice gift for my little munchkin. So sweet.

Congratulations, Jennifer and Patrick. I hope married life is full of all the joy and laughter we shared that day. On to the video..

Thanks, Royal Wedding, For the Free Day Off.

I met Tara and Noah for a portrait session on South Congress yesterday and I could not resist posting just one image immediately. Today and I have not been so good to each other so I thought playing around with one photo might abstract my unsettled nerves. I love Tara’s combination of red lips, blonde hair and jet black liner. Not a look I could ever pull off but it suits her quite well! Now let me go back to sleep and try today all over again when I wake up.
