It was such a pleasure meeting this family for photos — YESTERDAY! Mom is originally from Austin, and the family lived in NYC for some time before returning to Austin this summer. I’m extremely thrilled when we can add an element of excitement and fun to a session. Since little Teddy will be turning one soon, she chose the perfect cake with an incredible teddy bear and gorgeous details.

Big Brother Henry wasn’t so keen on being photographed, initially. But the parents remained calm and gave him all the time he needed. It was not long before we were able to capture some of his best smiles. I even got in a little cardio, chasing him around. These boys are absolutely sweet and I do give the parents a lot of credit for helping making this session so successful with their preparation and flexible attitude.

When it came time for the smashing, I knew that Teddy would either cry or be totally indifferent to the beautiful cake in front of him, or that he’d be intoxicated by that first taste of sugary confection and maul the cake like a bear should. Obviously, it was definitely not the former. Teddy was all smiles as soon mom placed the cake before him. He showed interest and barely sampled a bite, even attempting to crawl away from the cake at one point. By the time he got the hang of things, we were able to get some incredible memories for this family. It was a total mess, but so worth it!

Dreams are made of this very Austin family photography session. First of all, the perfectly preppy children. Even more, the sun-kissed fields of joy and the baby that let me hold her on my left hip while I clicked away at her parents with my right finger. This was by far one of my more successful sessions including a toddler of late. There is something deeply special about the simplicity of these images.

And I don’t need to have a son to know how special this mother-son relationship truly is. It was so hard to pick my favorite shot of the duo. Something tells me maybe she’s the woman he’ll love the longest.

We made the connection that this sweet girl played on a soccer team with my daughter and my husband was the first person they met at the park when they moved to the area. They danced, they giggled. And they nailed all of their photo goals.

This Hill Country ranch session, complete with two happy children will give you life. Or, at the very least, plant a big, huge smile on your face. Fortunately, the Longhorns and I have a bye week; I pulled my back mid-session last night. I was able to soldier through the this one as well as the one after. They were so amazing that both families yielded twice the number of images as a normal session. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize until I was back in my car, that I was a sweatier mess than a Texas defensive lineman. Because it’s #texas, we’re all in sweaters and rain boots today.

The Boons don’t mind, they know what it’s like to be a hot mess from time to time. Because of that, I send out a questionnaire for clients to fill out prior to a session. It helps me gather information on things to avoid, shows or songs the children love, and the activities they’re into. You’d be surprised at how many extra giggles I am able to garner with this intel.

Most of my business is referral-based, so I can almost always name drop when photo-fatigue sets in . . . “I can’t wait to show *friend/past client* these photos!” “I wonder if your mom will submit this for the FTE slideshow?” “Let’s do a silly photo and leave it out for your elf, ___.” Miraculously, this always helps kids relax! I’m almost always warned about the toddlers. They are the most defiant and their behavior is always so unpredictable, according to moms. LOVE it when they end up gracing the camera with every part of their personality. Especially little brother, Wilson!

I had a blast working with this party of four, new to Austin and recent transplants from New York City. They were referred to me by equally beautiful and sweet client/friend Nasreen. I am so glad we were able to squeeze in this session before the craziness of Fall photo season. Mom Rachana and I had a phone conversation before the session and the connection was immediate. I knew they wanted their lifestyle in-home session to be about the connection and love between parents, older brother and little sister. We started in their great room which was abundant with natural light. The outdoor area provided a great view and an opportunity for their aging dog to participate.  We ended up in in the front of the house, capturing father and son playing basketball. And finally a shot in front of the house for posterity.
