Chance Encounter

It’s not just the people present that make a session run smoothly. The atmosphere plays a HUGE part in making sure the lifestyle photography we capture are life-long treasures. Being at the Ferguson home was a perfect setting for the day. family photography austin ferguson

When I first arrived at the house to check lighting, the kids were eating breakfast and completely at ease when it was time to get ready. That certainly helped set the tone for more sweet moments on camera, like little sister taking some of her first, wobbly steps and brother flying into the air while bouncing on his bed. Brushing your teeth or just snuggling up together may not seem like a big deal every day, but they really do make some of my favorite photographs. It’s these precious, seemingly small moments that create the images a family wants to keep for years to come.

One of the areas the family spends a lot of time is the backyard. We had a fairytale-like setting outside for candid photographs doing what they already love! Picking and watering flowers from the garden, along with painting got a little messy. Everyone had to subsequently shed a few layers, but it was well worth it for these shots of the simple joys they experience all the time.

The Ferguson family together is so sweet and loving. Bonus: the kids really do enjoy being together! This sibling bond made the entire shoot even more pleasant. At one and three years old, a positive attitude is never a guarantee. Thankfully older brother serves as a personal entertainer for little sis. This created some belly laughs that melt my heart just looking at the photos again.

I don’t know when or where it will happen, but I do however expect to run into the Fergusons again. Hopefully for more lifestyle photography! Whatever happens, it’s a thrill for me that my photography can bring these kismet connections and such wonderful people into my life.

Top 10 Best Family Photographer Austin family

“We’ve worked with several other photographers. One challenge was the length of time between the photo session and receiving the images, which made it difficult to get Christmas cards out on time. You are wonderful to work with! You put everyone at ease and take the most beautiful pictures. And we get our images when expected or sooner. The process is seamless, from booking, to payment, to the photo session, to receiving the images. You make it easy. We absolutely love you!!”

Bold black and white stripes, blue suede settee, bright and colorful patterns, plus a dash of fun – what is not to love about this family session? I loved capturing the darling Housley family! Their sweet personality and happy vibes truly made this another successful session for the books. I can’t wait to work with the again soon.

Juggling Act

austin family newborn photography

As a family and maternity photographer, it’s my job to put the family at ease while capturing just the right shots. Sometimes that means wearing multiple hats! My day with the Dharamsi family was equal parts beauty and balance.

Kristin has her hands full, to say the very least! She has two boys, a little girl, and another baby girl on the way. With so much going on in their lives, it was important to the family we get some maternity photographs as a family of five, before things get a bit more chaotic with a stork delivery in late April.

The gift of a new child is always such a magical thing for me to capture for a mother. Carrying each child is a gift, and showcasing the mother’s beauty just before birth is a sight every mom should get to keep with her as those little babies become adults.

The Dharamsis came dressed to impress. The men were sporting their handsome button-down shirts, while the little lady wore a Spring dress made for a field full of wildflowers. Kristin was stunning in a dress that illuminated her pregnancy glow.

I was certainly smitten with the three little ones to say the least. The boys doted over their baby sister, and I’m sure they’ll do the same for their newest addition, due any day now. Little sister was darling and quickly became very comfortable with me. Even reaching out for me to pick her up, after being in front of the lens long enough.

When kids just aren’t feeling the family or maternity session anymore, or perhaps get a little wild, parents often think the whole day is a bust. It’s actually quite the opposite! The Dharamsis shared with me, just days after our shoot together, that they were nervous about the photographs. I was able to share just how wonderfully they turned out.

In my job, it’s all about balance. Finding the right ways to get a laugh or sweet moment, while sometimes holding a little one on my hip. It’s all part of the juggling act, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Capturing the Culture

Austin Family Photography Vije

What a family chooses to wear during our sessions together is completely up to them. I am very happy to capture whatever makes them feel confident and comfortable in front of my camera lens. Getting to work with a family who has vibrant, traditional clothing makes that even more exciting for me to work with! The bold colors and intricate details of the Vije family’s Indian culture added so much depth to the images.

The Vije family and I are longtime friends. Our kids have been classmates, we take part in the same bookclub, and they’ve become active with the Dell Miracle Book. I’ve been volunteering with this program for years now. This is a special project close to my heart  that raises money for the local hospital.

Having familiarity helps create a more relaxed setting. I even got high praise from dad for giving the family the “quickest and smoothest session ever”. I take that as a big compliment from any dad, especially with the NFC Championship on at the same time! (There’s a little more pressure knowing the fourth quarter of one of the biggest games of the year is lingering in the back of some minds.)

Scheduling time together is one of the trickier parts of my job as a family photographer. Between holidays, birthdays and vacations there are a lot of obstacles when it comes to carving out time to sit still and smile for the camera. Thankfully the stars align, and on this day we were able to capture the magnificence of the Vije family’s culture.

One surprise addition to the elegant shoot was a good sized scrape across the youngest son’s forehead. We also had less than ideal temperatures to be working outdoors that day. Sure we had some unfortunate setbacks, but the boys’ sweet dispositions and everyone’s ability to roll with the punches got us some great photographs.

Knowing a family before the shoot definitely helps create a more relaxed, easy-going atmosphere. However, it’s not necessary. With a clear vision, some last minute adaptations, and a beautiful backdrop I love being able to capture the unique qualities of a family that make them stand-out and shine.
