{austin photographer} a surprise proposal in houston

A little back story –  this groom-to-be’s cousin, Thu, and I grew up attending the same church. The last time I saw her, we were in high school. You can imagine my delight when I heard from her as inquired about me traveling to Houston for this shoot. A reunion AND a surprise proposal photos? I said YES and we began strategizing immediately.

Lauren thought she was traveling from Minnesota to Houston for a quick weekend visit with her boyfriend’s family and friends.  She was also only partially right when she thought she would be going to the park on Friday evening for a family portrait session. Little did she know, a big surprise proposal had been in the works for some time and everyone else was in on it. You can imagine the excitement as they awaited the big moment from the sideline. Everything happened so quickly and I’m so glad I was able to capture these moments from afar.

These two are the sweetest and I have never found myself hugging clients so much during a shoot!!

Congratulations Lauren and Quy. Lauren, I know you will make one stunning bride :) And thank you, Thu, for making sure this moment will be remembered forever.

{austin photographer} 2012 mini sessions

pass the glitter – it’s time to sparkle and shine!

my 2012 holiday mini sessions are just around the corner and I’m getting pretty excited.

one day, four slots, a fabulous “inside out” stylized session, and so much fun!

how does a mini session differ from a full session?
regular photo sessions run sixty to ninety minutes in length at the location of your choice whereas mini sessions are conducted at a specific location chosen by the photographer and last twenty minutes.

may I book multiple mini sessions together?
you may book two or more consecutive sessions. in fact, it is recommended but not required that you book multiple sessions if you have a group of five or more.

what is the cost of a mini session and what does it include?
a non-refundable $75 is required to secure your spot. this includes: one phone consultation to discuss wardrobe, location, and meeting details, a twenty-minute session on October 21st, an online gallery of 15-30 images for proofing, sharing and ordering in early November, and three high-resolution images of your choosing + print release.

how do I sign up for a mini session?
please contact Ziem at 850.319.4591 or send a note to z@ziemphotography.com with your preferred date and time slot and plan to arrive 10 minutes prior to your scheduled start time.

what happens after the session?
within two weeks of the session date, a unique link will be emailed to you with a private online gallery. from there, you will have the opportunity to preview your proofs, select three images for downloading, and purchase additional images, prints, or custom holiday cards. no purchase is necessary!

available times for Sunday, October 21st:

{austin photography} so happy together

Happy Monday, lovelies! Starting a new week here with this fun couple and their Austin engagement portrait session.

I recently met with this talented designer and bride-to-be, Suzanne, and we hit off so well {at least in my book} that she booked me right on the spot for her upcoming fall wedding. {For the record: these types of brides are always my favorites.} It will be my first time covering a wedding at Springdale Farm in East Austin and after hearing this savvy bride and groom’s creative ideas and plans, I’m really looking forward to being a part of their big day.  I captured this smile-inducing fest straight from our very own shores of Town Lake. The lake, a dog, and a happy couple at sunrise – all out magic makers for fabulous Austin photographs.

{Austin Engagement} Tina + Dustin

“Love!!!! It made me cry good cry. Dustin loved it.”

I met Tina in the very late 90′s when I was in high school. We both lived in FL at the time and she would often serve my sisters and I “sampler platters and strawberry tall cakes” as I was told on the day of this engagement session. I always thought her sweet and and it was about a year or so later that Tina and I would find ourselves at the same parties among common friends, being silly and quoting lines from the movie “Freeway”. I always had my camera in tow and I remember the “mean” faces Tina would give me anytime I snapped a compromising photo.

Fast forward ten+ years – Tina’s perfect guy pops the question and she decides they would drive over to Austin from San Antonio for engagement photos. Although it had been a decade since we’d last seen each other and spoken to one another, I immediately knew the places I had to take her and her fiance. I was ecstatic. And as you can see in these photos, it really didn’t matter where I took Tina and Dustin. These two are pretty much comfortable together anywhere. Should I mention their first date lasted an entire weekend?

And this is why I love my job – photography can open you up to something new, bring you somewhere unexpected, and take you places that are old and familiar. Tina & Dustin – thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of this special time in your life. Nothing makes me happier than seeing my old friends {talking history not age here} happy. Not even chocolate milkshakes or strawberry tall cakes. I hope you enjoy the photos and slideshow!

{Austin Engagement Photos} Kifany + Matt

“These pictures are great…looking forward to seeing the rest of them! You are soooo talented and we had so much fun with you! Thank you for the thoughtful blog posting…you are a sweetheart! Looking forward to our big day in March and happy you are a part of it. “

As is so often the case with most blog postings, I have to start on the topic of weather. I know – it’s almost ad nauseum – but would you believe. Of all days for torrential downpour. Mother nature chose a day that I procured vintage furniture from Georgetown for the should-have-been outdoor half of an engagement session.

Kif and I met over coffee and the relationship budded over Kendra Scott jewelry and Michael Kors shoes {though not generally given to cliche, I must say this relationship was one made in heaven}. We sat at Lola Savannah and after talking at length about the big day and about ourselves, she decided to book me on the spot. We would later run into each other at a birthday party and then meet for engagement photos on the fifth anniversary of their meeting. It also happened to be UT vs OU game day and let me tell you after the woe that was the Red River Shoot Out, this was just the “whoa” Austin needed.

Matt and Kif – I cannot put into words how excited I am to be a part of something this wonderful. You guys are fabulous and I am thrilled to be documenting the lives of two people who are beautiful both together and individually.

Looking forward to your wedding day!
xo, Z

{Austin Engagement} Liz + Brian

Literally, I mean, and figuratively -  Liz and Brian are too cool and hot for Texas. Unless you’ve been napping under a rock or busy following Kim K’s Un-Royal Wedding {did I just give away my celebrity gossip know how??} you, too, have been dying for cool in any shape or form in these parts all June, July, August and September long. As luck would have it, a cold front {read: high 80′s} came through and brought on pleasing lighting and strong 3mph winds for a fun-filled engagement session.

Liz and I had been exchanging emails for a about a week or two leading up to the shoot, carefully planning location and wardrobe, so when we met in the hotel lobby I greeted her with a big, unabashed hug. We began shooting almost immediately and as evidenced by the stunning photos below she was a natural in front of my camera. Sometimes grooms need guidance on posing, smiling, and relaxing the face more than brides do. Such was not the case with Brian. He was easy going and laid back. It was quite evident he was comfortable with a camera document their love story while he naturally doted on his beautiful fiance.

Thank you Liz and Brian for the opportunity and for taking the time from your graduate studies to let me do what I love!

xo, Z

Sleep and Peek

Human alarms don’t believe in weekends. And they she expects no less, spare no mercy when the husband is away. I attempted to hit the snooze at 5:00AM by putting her in my bed then I was abruptly roused from sleep when I overheard her in the bathroom using the only available light for reading. I think that act officially stripped me from “Mother of the Year”.

Nothing gets between my baby and her books. Or me and my baby. Not even sleep! We did what girls do at 5:00AM; we hung out. She eventually succumbed to tiredness and I snuck in a little work before the YWA breakfast followed by another downtown engagement session later today. Cannot wait!!

Speaking of early mornings and Austin engagement sessions, I met this fun, adorable, vivacious couple on a very early morning several days ago. I have known Sang and Jessi for quite some time but I never got to really hang out with them until recently. So glad I did. Super delightful couple. No caffeine required.

Have a wonderful weekend! I hope it is full of rest.

Pursuit of Happiness

“You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for work as it is for lovers.

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the only way to be truly satisfied

is to do what you believe is great work.

And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.

If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. And don’t settle.

As with all matters of the heart you’ll now when you find it.

As with any relationship, it keeps getting better as the years go on.

So keep looking. Don’t settle.

Austin Engagement Session: Michelle + Will

“Wow Ziem! These look incredible and could not have turned out more perfect! You did such an amazing job and we are so grateful. We will be in contact with you for wedding day photos soon :)

I had the great pleasure of doing Michelle and Will’s downtown engagement portrait session last weekend. We met a little over a month ago {just days before Will would propose} at a function where I was commissioned by her {super cool} dad. Engagement sessions are my absolute favorite – nothing like capturing the story of two people in love. Such was the case with Michelle and Will – they are so laid back and easy going, fun to be around and should I just state the obvious- too hot for Texas?! The heat that day was too unbearable for May, I tell you, but they were all smiles and laughs, albeit sweaty smiles and laughs, rocking it out the entire session all the while keeping it fabulous. And I couldn’t help but notice how natural they were together, and in front of my camera. I guess history helps- Will’s Mom was Michelle’s 8th grade teacher so they have known each other for quite some time. I could go on about this fantastic couple but let’s get on with the photos.

Michelle and Will, I hope you all enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed creating the memories {and of course spending time with your family at Fortune Restaurant}. Look forward to working with you again soon. Here are a few of my favorite images. You can see more by clicking on the slideshow below.

Austin Engagement: Michelle + Will

“Thanks so much, Ziem! We had a blast with you. Will, who like I said usually hates pictures, said when we were driving home “That was actually so much fun!”. We can’t wait to see how they all turned out.”

This Memorial Day, will you be remembering a fallen soldier, welcoming the first blush of summer, or celebrating heroes and she-roes? I plan to sit by the pool with Kelley and Rebecca, then hopefully finish a collaboration piece I have been working on with Kim. Next in line is the engagement session of the most fun and handsome couple to be getting married, Michelle and Will (who is currently serving).

I hope you enjoy the sneak peek. Be sure to check back for more!

Austin Photographer: Tara + Noah

First, I’d like to thank Tara’s father for his generous bid of over $500 for a photo package I donated to the recent Christian Outreach Foundation Silent Auction. If you haven’t heard about this amazing non-profit, they provide free after school guidance to underprivileged children whose parents lack the resources to do so themselves. And the co-founder, Liz, is such a doll and a pleasure to work with; I’ve promised to donate to them again next year.

I can’t get enough of Tara and Noah, which is evidenced by the number of images I have to share with you all. This couple is simply fabulous and they undoubtedly furthered my already fanatical obsession with red lipstick, suspenders, big tops, and red & white stripes. How fitting was it that I would meet them just before one big, obnoxious birthday carnival? I smiled. I chuckled, especially after we were ejected from private property {a rite of passage}. My heart sang. And in the split second of meeting this twosome I felt so grateful and fortunate to be doing what I love- and that is meeting and photographing beautiful people!

Engagement Session + Save the Date Video: Ashley & Neil

“Ziem, these photos are absolutely amazing! I’m blown away with the number of incredible shots!!! We cannot wait to share the video with our friends and family. Thank you!!!”

I received an email from this soon to be bride who attempted for many months tracking down my name and contact info. She finally managed to succeed only weeks after booking her wedding photographer. I must admit I was quite disappointed to learn I missed the opportunity to be the austin photographer capturing the union of such a fabulous pair. But I am so glad to have had the great pleasure of meeting Ashley and Neil for their engagement photos.

Ashley has a smile that could melt any heart like ice-cream on a sunny day and Neil has a likeability factor that can be spotted from a mile away. (Side note: anyone notice Neil slightly resembling the young James Taylor on the record cover or did I edit the slideshow far too many times?) Really- could I have dreamt up a more ideal couple’s story to capture..no or probably not? Ditto. And to say they look great together is an understatement.

We chose the location W hotel since this is where they will wed. And their story began back in September of 2007 during a Dave Matthews Band concert at ACL so it was great we could snap a photo in front of Moody Theatre.

Ashley and Neil- Congratulations and all the best on this very special occasion. May the years ahead of you be filled with the joy and love. I hope these photos will be shared for generations to come.

Spread the Love

Austin Engagement Portraits: Carolina & Bert

On the seventh day of Christmas, Santa gave to me a couple’s love a-brimming.

A mother and daughter gazing.
Young lady graduating.
Four all aglow.
Three big grins.
Tender sister love.
and a branch full of purple berries.

I met with Carolina and Bert on South Congress for their engagement session this fall and had a great time getting to know them before their big day. When I asked the lovely couple how they met, Bert was first to respond. He claimed they had been teaching at the same school for quite some time and both happened attend the same conference. Carolina noticed him immediately and rather than approaching him she made her presence so obvious he could not miss her! Now- this is usually the part where brides refute the validity of the first meeting. Nope. Not this one. She unabashedly retorted, “Yes, after a few days he finally noticed me!” I loved her honesty. This is how I know their marriage will be of longstanding!

And I found out they love Hall & Oates as much as we do. What’s there not to love about this duo?
