Austin Newborn Photography – More Happiness on the Way

As a newborn photographer, I’m constantly inspired by the new life which so many families have given me the opportunity to document. I recently shared a few of my favorites from my latest newborn session and after delivering digital negatives to this sweetest family, I couldn’t resist falling in love with several more. This handsome little guy definitely earned “newest favorite newborn session” in my book. Sorry, Sunny!

There’s nothing more pure than the joy of becoming new parents, the distinct scent of a new baby, a newborn’s fuzzy lashes, the feeling of those delicate toes, and those soft shoulders. I’m also crazy about newborn photography because I know how quickly it goes and, before you know it, you’re staring at images from your newborn session and marveling at how much your baby has already changed. And it’s only been five weeks.

I am not sure if I was more moved by the fact that she’s been ours for almost half a decade or if I was more blown away by her knack for planning a celebration with such creativity and wisdom. Truly a visionary! Where did time go?

Austin Photographer – Shooting for Success

I want to help my clients achieve the most successful session possible.  The big question I am often asked is “What should we wear for our family photos?” Finding the perfect ensemble can be easy with proper planning.

Here are a few things to consider when deciding on what to wear for a family session. Think carefully about the intended purpose of the photos and dress accordingly. Will the images hang on a wall, print on a card, and or be used on your blog or online? The environment in which the photos will end up is a huge factor when deciding what to wear.

If a print will be enlarged on canvas in the formal living room, for example, you may opt for a more stately or elegant look. A combination of black, white, grey and beige is timeless. You can strategically add bold accents using a tie, scarf or jewelry.

Maybe you are a multi-generational family shoot and have plans to drop an image into a pre-selected template? If so, the entire group should mull over colors and looks together to maintain harmony. This will also ensure the photo fits into the existing design cohesively.

If your website is heavily patterned, take the safe route and opt for solid colors so as not to clash with your background or pages. Add layering pieces such as cardigans and chunky jewelry for interest.

Avoid having children wear anything itchy or so uncomfortable that they cannot move freely. The purpose of the shoot is to relax, have fun, run, play, laugh, and give your photographer the most genuine expressions.

I can’t emphasize the importance of this enough – have everyone try on everything in advance. When everyone feels great and can relax, it really shows in photos.

Austin Photography – Shooting for Success: Holi

austin photographers ziem photography holi

Holi is my favorite Hindu tradition among the few I celebrate with the girls. It is the most beautiful, colorful and meaningful holiday (not to mention F-U-N)! Imagine bold-colored powder, buckets of water, squirt guns, blaring music, great food, friends, family, and Indian dancers – there isn’t a more joyous day! If you are planning to attend a festival this year, consider the following tips for capturing the magic that is Holi.

  • Wear white clothing – something you won’t mind having to toss out after the event. Last year, I also wore rain boots.

  • If you feel compelled to protect your hair and eyes, wear a hat or turban and glasses.

  • Bring towels, baby wipes, and a change of clothes for post-event clean up.

  • If you are shooting on a DSLR camera, protect your gear with plastic housing and avoid switching camera lenses, batteries and cards at all cost. Shoot on two camera bodies with different lenses if you have the luxury.

  • Climb on chairs, balconies or any structure that might give you a birds eye view of the festival. Last year, I was able to capture images of the entire crowd and particles in the air as a result.

  • It’s all in the details – powder, colored fingers, clothing, facial features. Given the fun nature of the event, there’s no need to hesitate when approaching strangers and getting up close and personal.

  • After achieving your desired shots of fellow event goers, be sure to return the favor!

5 Tips for a Successful Maternity Session

austin maternity photos portraits ziem photography

Documenting a woman’s body during pregnancy can be challenging, but so much fun! With careful planning and a little sensitivity, here are a few helpful tips on how I help my clients prepare for maternity portraits that will be cherished forever. See more from my ongoing series of “Shooting for Success“.

1. When should a maternity session take place?
My favorite time for maternity photos is in the middle to end of trimester two when the point of the shoot (a bump) is obvious and before a mom-to-be starts to retain water. Most first-time mothers can get away with shooting in the third trimester, but it would better serve the client if she can avoid the point of I-Might-Go-Into-Labor-Any-Minute stage. If you’re nearing the end of your pregnancy, don’t let it deter you from scheduling a maternity session. I photographed a 36-month-old pregnant with two dogs last week. She felt so great that with the intermittent wind, I almost asked her to do a little Beyonce shaking. But I digress. . . .

2. What is the best location for maternity portraits?
I decide on a location based on the client’s individual style and where I feel she would be most comfortable. Whether it will be on location at a park, in a home with natural light with and a photo-ready nursery, or in a traditional setting of a private studio, documenting the anticipation of motherhood varies from person to person. It’s not every day that we carry an additional 20+ pounds while taking sharp kicks to the ribs so be sure to consider the amount of walking and climbing that might be required.

3. Wardrobe tips for a maternity session.
I could do a separate post on this subject, but a few general rules of road for picture-perfect photos.

  • Form-fitting, long maxi dresses or, if you’re not a dress person, skinny jeans accentuate your belly beautifully. Make sure to go fitted from top to bottom.
  • Flowy articles of clothing tend to not flatter as it hides your belly and silhouette while adding unnecessary pounds.
  • Step away from loud prints with all-over directional pattern. An exception could be made for accessories and accent items.
  • Pops of color and patterns work well in small doses – think scarves, belts, or necklaces.
  • Layering items such as scarves, cardigans, a sport coat, and chunky jewelry can quickly diversify the look of an outfit simply by removing these small items.

4. Pre-session pampering.
Pamper yourself before a session. You deserve it! Your hands will be moved and manipulated around the belly – clean, hydrated and manicured nails won’t be regretted later. Have your make up professionally done and go a little heavier than normal (as you would for a night out). Schedule an appointment to have your hair blown out.

5. What are the most flattering maternity poses and angles?
A good photographer must know how to highlight a subject’s best features and make the mom-to-be feel beautiful. Shooting from above compliments the face and rotund belly. Leave a little space in between the waist line and arms to accentuate your curves and shape. I often ask my clients to hold her belly, close her eyes, and think about the baby. She is growing life in her body and needs to remember that soon she will be holding a new baby in her arms! The smile and twinkle in her eyes when she connects with her growing child is all that is needed to create the spectacular shot. The most important thing is to capture the glow of an anticipating mom – that is what she will want to remember most.

Upon completion of a successful maternity shoot, print and frame your favorite(s). You might not get around to it if you wait until after the newborn arrives. At this point you should also start planning your newborn session. Notify your photographer of your due date as the preferred window of time for shooting a newborn is typically within the first 14 days of life. You should also get an idea of what shots you like and secure the necessary props your photographer may not already have. I’ll be back for my next installment of “Shooting for Success” with helpful tips for planning a newborn session.

I hope you enjoyed these helpful tips for a successful maternity shoot and I hope to create a maternity experience you will remember. For rates and availability, please send me a note to z@ziemphotography.com or reach me by phone at 850.319.4591.

Austin Family Photography Review

Wow! I’m at a loss for words. Not only do I get to wake up each day chasing my dream job and doing what I love for the most incredible clients and friends – I also get repaid with the sweetest compliments.

I felt compelled to share this latest review from my awesome friend and client. Her darling little angels are no stranger to the blog; in fact, they must be the least unfamiliar to anyone who has been following my work since 2011 when I got to photograph big brother for the first time.

“We work with Ziem because the is the magic trifecta of family photographers – she puts us at ease in front of the camera, she carefully listens to what we want out of a shoot, and her eye for a good shot is second to none.

When I say “puts us at ease” in front of the camera, I mean making my husband & me, two of the least photo-inclined, publicity seeking persons ever, consider voluntarily stepping in front of a lens without the assistance of tequila. True, I’ve had the good fortune to know Ziem as a friend too, but in both her professional & personal capacity she just has a knack for making people forget the camera is there. Ok, almost forget – for my husband & I to completely forget there would need to be said tequila involved, but with Ziem’s assistance we get as close as we can while sober. My kids, less inclined to tequila *fingers crossed*, absolutely adore Ziem too, and behave in a magical way for her sans the tantrums & such they apparently reserve for my husband & me. Not only do they usually look in the same direction for her, they do it while smiling, a parenting double-double rarely seen in nature.

We also love that Ziem listens so closely to what clients want. My husband & I prefer more candid, less posed shots with a minimum of props, for example, and Ziem always delivers on that. We happen to prefer a holiday card photo with just the kids – remember what I said about our being really, really awkward on camera? – and this year Ziem exceeded our wildest hopes with some gorgeous shots of our two minis.

One of Ziem’s special superpowers, though, is that she can adapt given each client’s tastes. Her trademarks are consistent with every shoot – excellent use of natural light & capturing the personality of her subjects, for starters – but she can shift styles and shots depending on what the clients want. It’s a flexibility I’ve not encountered before with a photographer & just goes to show how talented she is.

Finally, we love to work with Ziem because of her flawless taste level & eye for a good shot. Not only will she provide the shots we ask for, she’ll provide shots we didn’t even realize we wanted until we saw them. A number of those moments are now framed & hanging in my house – and those are the items I’ll take with me in a fire. She creates not just beautiful work but heirloom-quality works I’ll pass down one day.”

Thanks, Melissa! I couldn’t ask for a better friend, Mommy Mafia, amazing contributor, dream client, fashion advisor, and shopping enabler. xoxox
